Kaâba

The eighth canvas is called “Kaaba” It measures 1.94m x 1.30m.
It is composed of geometric shapes on the entire surface of the canvas. We see
squares, rectangles of different sizes and colors: blue, red, yellow, brown, gold and
silver. Throughout this composition of geometric shapes, seven yellow squares have
inside them a black square that symbolizes the cubic form of the Kaaba and five
squares where is written the Chahada in calligraphy, as a reminder to turn around
the Kaaba seven times while reciting the Shahada.
The rest of the geometric shapes refer to the Berber decorations that are part of the
culture, of the origins of the artist’s country: Algeria.
The set is covered with a film of miniature golden spirals on the entire surface of the
canvas.

The chosen Aya is in Surah 2 verse 144.

                            BISMILLAH RAHMANI RAHIM

We have certainly seen the turning of your face, [O Muhammad],
toward the heaven, and We will surely turn you to a qiblah with which
you will be pleased. So turn your face toward al-Masjid al-Haram. And
wherever you [believers] are, turn your faces toward it [in prayer].
Indeed, those who have been given the Scripture well know that it is the
truth from their Lord. And Allah is not unaware of what they do
